The Tiny MBA summary & review

Most business books are a drawn out elaboration of one idea. The Tiny MBA is the exact opposite: a collection of many pithy and actionable ideas.

It's wisdom-per-word ratio is so good that it warrants a reminder to re-read at least every year, if not more often.

Business authors, self-proclaimed experts, and "thought leaders" have a habit of making everything more complicated than it actually is. The Tiny MBA gets straight to the heart of what's important by simplifying ideas down to their very core so that they're easy to understand.

It's one of the only books I would gift to a complete stranger and also regularly revisit myself.

Favorite quotes:

Most people confuse "brand" with "marketing."

"Marketing" is a wide range of activities which help people believe that you understand them.

"Brand" is a result of doing that right.

Too many people are quick to throw away opportunities because they aren't already "passionate" about it, instead of doing the work and finding the passion through learning and growing.

Passion isn't an input for business process, it's an output.

Most business decisions are relatively reversible.

If you have a decision that doesn't seem reversible, try looking for ways to shrink the decision into smaller parts. That way, it's cheap or free to undo the decision if things don't go the way you expect.

People don't pay you because they like you. They pay you because you generate some kind of economic value or upside elsewhere in a system that matters to them.

If you learn how that system works, you can figure out how to make more money.

Most long term success doesn't look anything like success in the beginning. Or even in the middle.

Audience building should really just be called "earning trust at scale." Cuz that's what it is.

I think people confuse "scaleable" with "sustainable" in business.

If done well, teaching and marketing can be nearly indistinguishable from each other.

You can pick any kind of business you want to run, but unlike a video game you won't win extra points for playing on the most difficult mode.

Instead, use every advantage you have, however small they may seem.
